The Saint Joseph's University Hawks compete as members of the Atlantic 10 Conference in NCAA Division I basketball. The school has not competed in football since 1939. Saint Joseph's is a private Catholic (Jesuit) institution located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 4,000.

The campus straddles US 1 (City Avenue) on the northwestern side of Philadelphia, between Old Lancaster Road/54th Avenue and Wynnefield Avenue. The closest freeway access is a couple of miles away at the US 1 exit (exit 339) off I-76. Rail service is only a couple of blocks away at the Overbrook station. Michael J. Hagan Arena (4,200), known as Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse prior to its 2008 renovation, sits at the eastern tip of campus on the corner of 54th and Overbrook.

Saint Joseph's main rivals are Villanova, with which it contests the "Holy War" annually, and Temple, with whom the Hawks have had an in-city, in-conference, and Big Five rivalry for over fifty years. Other major rivals include the other two Big Five schools -- La Salle and Pennsylvania.

One might think that given the Hawks' brief foray into football in the 1920s, there are no Saint Joseph's alumni among the NFL rolls. However, FB John Cole and HB/DB Ted Laux did play in the NFL in the 1940s. Even more startling, HB Vince Papale actually played for the Eagles from 1976-1978 despite attending a college with no football team, and Disney released a biopic about him in 2006. As for the NBA/ABA, eighteen Hawks have made the next step, including Matt Guokas, Mike Bantom, Jameer Nelson, and Delonte West.
