The Lipscomb University Bisons compete as members of the Atlantic Sun Conference in NCAA Division I basketball. The school does not sponsor football. Lipscomb, formerly known as "Nashville Bible" and "David Lipscomb College", is a private Church of Christ institution located in Nashville, Tennessee. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 3,000.
The campus is on the south side of Nashville, nestled between Granny White Pike and Belmont Boulevard south of Woodmont Boulevard. I-440 exit 3 (US 431/Hillsboro Pike) is the closest freeway access; Woodmont intersects Hillsboro Pike about a half-mile south of the interchange. Allen Arena (5,028) is on Granny White Pike in the southern half of the campus.
Lipscomb's greatest rival is without question Belmont, located a mere two miles north of campus. The two schools have clashed for decades in a variety of different conferences, and their storied rivalry came to a head when they met in the finals of the Atlantic Sun men's tournament in 2006 with both teams having their first-ever NCAA tournament berth on the line. That game went to overtime and ended badly for Lipscomb, who were forced to settle for an NIT bid, and that first NCAA appearance remains elusive.
As would be expected, no Lipscomb alumni have played in the NFL; more surprising is that the same is true of the NBA and ABA despite the presence at Lipscomb of the top two scorers in college basketball history, Philip Hutcheson and John Pierce.
