The Central Connecticut State University Blue Devils compete as members of the Northeast Conference in NCAA Division I FCS football and in NCAA Division I basketball. Central Connecticut State, formerly known as "New Britain Normal School" and "Teacher's College of Connecticut", is a public institution located in New Britain, Connecticut, just southwest of Hartford. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 10,000.
The campus is located directly off exit 29 on CT 9, two miles south of its northern terminus at I-84. Arute Field (3,500) and Detrick Gymnasium (3,200) are situated mid-campus. Detrick hosted the Northeast Conference Men's Basketball Tournament in 1998, 2002, and 2007.
CCSU no longer appears to have a truly meaningful rival; current rivalries with Sacred Heart and Quinnipiac exist, but the school's true historical rival, Southern Connecticut State, has long since been left behind in Division II.
Central Connecticut State has only sent one player to the NFL, DE Joe Costello. However, several NFL coaches and executives played for the Blue Devils: former Packers and current Texas A&M head coach Mike Sherman, former Cowboys head coach Dave Campo, and Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli. University of Houston defensive coordinator John Skladany is also a former Devil. Two CCSU alums have played in the NBA (Keith Closs and Corsley Edwards).
