The Colgate University Raiders compete as members of the Patriot League in NCAA Division I FCS football and in NCAA Division I basketball. Colgate is a private non-sectarian institution located in the village of Hamilton, New York, in the central part of the state just west of Syracuse. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 3000. Colgate's teams were formerly known as the "Red Raiders." In the 1970s the school phased out its use of a Native American mascot, but in 2001 the "Red" was dropped due to concerns that the nickname was still insensitive.
