The Mountain State University Cougars suspended its athletic programs in the summer of 2012 as a result of accreditation issues. At the time, they were members of the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (an NAIA Division II conference), but chose to compete in NAIA Division I as independents in men's basketball. Although co-educational, the school did not sponsor women's basketball, nor did it sponsor football. Mountain State, formerly "Beckley College" and "College of West Virginia" is (despite its somewhat misleading current name) a private non-sectarian institution located in Beckley, West Virginia, about an hour southeast of Charleston. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 4,000.
