The Phillips University Haymakers ceased operations in 1998 when the school closed due to financial problems. At the time, the school was a member of the Sooner Athletic Conference, competing in NAIA Division I basketball. It had not fielded a football team since 1933. Phillips was a private Disciples of Christ institution located in Enid, Oklahoma, about an hour north of Oklahoma City. The school's teams were sometimes (though unofficially) called the "Skunks," as a play on the school's initials; since the school's demise, the alumni association has embraced that, and the Skunk is now the semi-official mascot.
