The University of Texas-Pan American, or UTPA and previously just Pan American, Broncs compete as members of the Great West Conference (2004-2013) in NCAA Division I basketball. The school does not sponsor football. UTPA is a public institution located in Edinburg, Texas, in the Rio Grande Valley near Brownsville. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 17,000.
UTPA is located on the west side of midtown Edinburg, at the intersection of TX 107 (University Drive) and North Fifth Avenue. Although there is an exit for TX 107 off the US 281 freeway, one must navigate the Edinburg town square to get to campus that way; taking the Schunior Street exit is more convenient, especially if traveling there for a game, as UTPA Fieldhouse (4,000) is on the corner of Schunior Street and Sugar Road, on the northwest corner of the site. The campus is about a mile west of the freeway.
Pan American doesn't sport much in the way of rivalries. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Houston Baptist come the closest.
UTPA has never had an alum in the NFL, unsurprisingly. Six former Broncs have played in the NBA, led by former 76ers F Luke Jackson and journeyman C Otto Moore. The legendary Abe Lemons was head coach during the mid-70s, and Lon Kruger started his head coaching career in Edinburg.
