The William Jewell University Cardinals compete as members of the Heart of America Athletic Conference in NAIA football and NAIA Division I basketball. In 2011, the school will move to NCAA Division II and join the Great Lakes Valley Conference in basketball and compete as an independent for one year in football before the GLVC begins football competition for the first time in 2012.
