Prior to a 1980s NCAA ruling, many schools competed in Division I basketball, but kept their football programs at a Division III level.  After the ruling, these schools either dropped football altogether, or moved up to Division I; many later dropped football anyway.  Although some teams may have been College Division teams in years prior to 1973, and some may not have begun their basketball programs until after 1973, each of these schools played basketball solely as NCAA Division I members after that point, while at some point fielding Division III football teams.

Prior to a 1980s NCAA ruling, many schools competed in Division I basketball, but kept their football programs at a Division III level. After the ruling, these schools either dropped football altogether, or moved up to Division I; many later dropped football anyway. Although some teams may have been College Division teams in years prior to 1973, and some may not have begun their basketball programs until after 1973, each of these schools played basketball solely as NCAA Division I members after that point, while at some point fielding Division III football teams.
