The California State University, San Marcos Cougars compete as independents in NAIA Division I basketball. The school does not sponsor football. CSUSM is a public institution located in San Marcos, California, in the far northern suburbs of San Diego. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 10,000.

CSUSM is a relatively new campus, having been created in 1989. It's located south of downtown San Marcos, along California State Highway 78.

The Cougars are relatively new to the collegiate sports scene, starting basketball for men and women in 2011. Thus there are few rivalries to be cultivated, but that is expected to change as the university has applied to join the NCAA at the Division II level.

As you would expect, the university has no alumni in either the NFL or NBA.
