The Mountain State University Cougars are members of the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (an NAIA Division II conference), but choose to compete in NAIA Division I as independents in men's basketball. Although co-educational, the school does not sponsor women's basketball, nor does it sponsor football. Mountain State, formerly "Beckley College" and "College of West Virginia" is (despite its somewhat misleading current name) a private non-sectarian institution located in Beckley, West Virginia, about an hour southeast of Charleston. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 4,000.
