The Athens State University Bears no longer participate in intercollegiate athletics, although the school is studying the possibility of reinstating their athletic program. The school dropped sports in 2003. At that time, Athens State competed as independents in NAIA Division I basketball. Athens State is a public senior-level institution located in Athens, Alabama, in the northern part of the state about 20 minutes west of Huntsville. The school was previously a Methodist institution known as Athens College before being turned over to the state in 1974. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 13,000.
