The Jacksonville University Dolphins compete as members of the Pioneer Football League in NCAA Division I FCS football, and in the Atlantic Sun Conference in NCAA Division I basketball. Jacksonville is a private non-sectarian institution located in Jacksonville, Florida. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 2,000.
The campus sits northeast of downtown between the east bank of the Saint John's River and FL 109 (University Boulevard) at its intersection with Merrill Road. A half-mile south of campus, FL 109 intersects FL 115 (Arlington Expressway) at the Mathews Bridge, the nearest freeway access. D.B. Milne Field (5,000) is at the corner of University Boulevard and Justina Terrace. Swisher Gymnasium (1,500) sits on Second Street in the middle of campus. Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena (15,000) is an off-campus municipal facility located downtown on Florida Avenue between the Matthews Expressway and FL 228 (Commodore Point Expressway), one block west of the Gator Bowl.
Jacksonville had several strong rivalries during its days in the Sun Belt Conference, but most of those teams departed the Sun Belt in 1991 and their fortunes diverged from Jacksonville's. There is a rivalry with Stetson, dating back to their days together in the Florida Intercollegiate Conference, and now that crosstown North Florida has joined the league, a rivalry is developing as well.
As might be expected with only a little over a decade of football, no former Dolphins have played in the NFL. Basketball is another story, as ten Jacksonville alumni have played in the NBA and ABA, including Otis Smith, Dee Brown, and 5-time ABA All-Star and 6-time NBA All-Star Artis Gilmore, who as a junior at JU had led the Dolphins to their unexpected 1970 NCAA University Division title game appearance.
