The Niagara University Purple Eagles compete as members of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in NCAA Division I basketball. The school has not sponsored football since 1951. Niagara is a private Catholic (Vincentian) institution located in Lewiston, New York, just north of Buffalo. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 3,000.
The campus is located one mile south of the terminus of I-190 at the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge to Canada, at the intersection of NY 61 (Hyde Park Boulevard) and NY 104 (Robert Moses Parkway), and overlooking the Niagara River at the border between Niagara Falls and Lewiston. Gallagher Center (2,400) sits roughly in the center of campus.
Niagara's chief rival is Canisius, and to a slightly lesser extent Saint Bonaventure.
Niagara has provided eight players to the NFL, all of whom played in the NFL prior to 1950. As one might expect from a team making 16 post-season appearances, the basketball program has fared better; 11 Purple Eagles have gone on to play in the NBA and ABA, including Larry Costello, Manny Leaks, and All-Star, 1971 Rookie of the Year, and Houston Rockets legend Calvin Murphy.
