The '''Triangular League''' was the final, and longest-running, incarnation of what originated as the '''Northern Intercollegiate Football Association''' in 1885. That league was composed of four Massachusetts colleges: [[Amherst]], [[MIT]], [[Tufts]], and [[Williams]]. After two years, the league was shaken up somewhat and became the '''Eastern Intercollegiate Football Association'''; Tufts and Williams departed, replaced by [[Dartmouth]], [[Stevens Tech]], and [[Trinity (CT)]], but Trinity was quickly replaced by Williams. After a brief expansion in 1890 lasted only one season, MIT and Stevens Tech departed a year later to leave the league with only Amherst, Dartmouth, and Williams. A year after that, the league once again changed its name to the Triangular League. The membership would remain stable until 1899, when Dartmouth left; [[Wesleyan (CT)]] took the third spot in the league for its final three years of existence, and this formation would be the historical genesis behind the [[{{little3}}]], reformed in 1910 and still in existence today (albeit on an entirely unofficial level).
