The Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women Tournament began in 1969 as the Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics for Women Tournament in 1969 before changing in 1972.  Through 1974, the tournament was for all women's colleges; beginning in 1975, Division II and Division III tournaments were held.  The final year of the AIAW tournament, 1982, was held in competition with the NCAA's initial women's tournaments, and the AIAW closed up shop following that tournament.
