LENS
lyrics: J. Morse © 1983
How many have the eyes of God
Seen walk the earth and die away?
How many have the camera's eyes
Seen pass this way each day?
Thousands of cars passing by
As you amble down the sidewalk
Head held high
Observing all that's near
Thousands of people hustle along
You see the dull expressions
In their eyes. . .
Are they blinded by their fear?
But you're oblivious
To emotion
You've trained yourself
Not to care
It's so obvious
The commotion
Is as close to life as you'll get
Close as you dare
Joy in some eyes, tears on some cheeks
Anger on other faces
Still others calm as the sea
Nothing affects their hearts
Happy or sad, is it good to have
A feeling to understand?
For awhile. . .
Could you play the different parts?
But you've been spared
The constant strain
Of emotion to
Destroy your mind
"Is it a good thing
To feel no pain
In your heart, or do you need
To feel?" the Jester whined.
How many have the silent few
Watched burn their lives away?
How many have my camera eyes
Seen destroy themselves today?
