WASTED YOUTH

lyrics: J. Morse © 1983

I - Prelude

Don't you see what you've done
Could you be the only forgotten one
Doesn't it hurt to know the truth
Can't you understand the way they feel
Now that you've crushed them all under your heel
As they cry over wasted youth
You don't know what it is you've done
You just sit there staring at the rising sun
Can't you decide where your life will lead
Take a break and relax before you proceed
You need to see what you do
To those who really care for you
Why do you push them all aside
There's no more feelings left for you to hide
Can't I talk to you now?
You have to, sometime, allow
Someone to get close by your side
You know I understand the way you feel
Your heart and mind are spinning like a circus wheel
And suddenly you break down and cry
And I know what it is you've done
You're just too sad and tired, the lonely one
Try to decide where our lives will lead
We need to take a break and relax before we proceed. . .

II - Delusion

You. . . always searching
Looking for the elusive answer
True. . . the end's approaching
But you're encroaching on the dancer
Walking tall with your head up in the clouds
But so unsure. . . can't you face the crowds
With your fears? Can't you remember all the years
When nothing ever seemed to go your way?
And the time had come to say goodbye
To the ones you loved. . . you could see the end had begun

Days. . . full of confusion
Intrusions on your tranquility
Ways. . . of seeing illusion
The final conclusion -- that your ability
Still survived, but you never got the pay
You deserved, now the past has slipped away
Through your hands as you travel distant lands
In search of the things that you once had
But you're growing ever sadder, day by day
And though nothing is assured, you wait to hear the final word
Oh, why do you sit and reminisce
   About the past
When there's so much left for you?
Oh, how can you let the world go by
   When you have
So much of life left in front of you?
Is it just a passing phase?
Can you see those things through the haze
That tell you to leave it all behind?

I. . . can see you running
From something that you've never seen
Why. . . aren't you coming
When you're so stunning upon the scene?
When you appear, everybody looks your way
"He's the star!" That's what all the people say
But you never hear, you're shaking in a fear
That envelops you into it's waiting grip
And buries you in a list of victim souls
That never understood -- never accomplished all the things they could
Oh, why do you sit and reminisce
   About the past
When there's so much left for you?
Oh, how can you let the world go by
   When you have
So much of life left in front of you?
Is it just a passing phase?
Can you see those things through the haze
That tell you to leave it all behind?

III - Reprise

You need to see what you do
To those who really care for you
Why do you push them all aside
There's no more feelings left for you to hide
Don't you see what you've done
You're not the only forgotten one
Of course, it hurts to know the truth
But I DO understand the way you feel
And I don't mind that your feelings aren't real
Cause we all still cry over wasted youth

It. . . is about time
You realized what you have done
You. . . in your lifetime
Committed the worst crime under the sun
Can you do anything for your soul?
Could you try? It's the one thing that could make you whole
Once again -- don't you remember when
You were the idol of a world
And then one day you curled up into a ball?
Now look to see the light
And try to start again and do it right
I think you can. . .
I'm sure you can. . .
Oh, no, I know. . . I know you can.
